Istanbul's Historic Peninsula hosts one of the world's most visited tourism concentrations and one of its richest dining cultures. Encompassing Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Fatih, this territory stretches from Hagia Sophia to the Grand Bazaar, from Topkapi Palace to Galata Bridge. In this guide we cover what the Historic Peninsula is, what each neighbourhood offers for dinner, key landmark distances and why Pino Gare is among the best dinner choices for the entire area.
What Is the Historic Peninsula?
The Historic Peninsula is bounded on three sides by water — the Golden Horn to the north, the Sea of Marmara to the south, the Bosphorus to the east — and by Byzantine walls to the west. The vast majority of Istanbul's UNESCO World Heritage monuments stand within these boundaries. Administratively the entire Fatih district lies here; Sultanahmet and Eminönü are its most visited sub-neighbourhoods.
Dining in Sultanahmet, Eminönü and Fatih
Each sub-neighbourhood has its own dining character. Sultanahmet is dense with tourist-facing venues, hotel restaurants and slightly elevated price points, though more affordable spots exist within walking distance of the Hippodrome. Eminönü's waterfront has fish-in-bread boats, grain-trade-era lokanta and cafes with Galata Bridge views. Fatih's inner districts paint a more local, everyday food profile.
Pino Gare Roof Top Restaurant sits on the Eminönü-Fatih border, on the 7th floor of Orient Express Hotel at HocaPaşa Mh., Hüdavendigar Cd. No:24. From this single address, every sub-neighbourhood on the Historic Peninsula is reachable within a short walk or one tram stop. Open every day 12:00–24:00; WhatsApp reservations: +90 546 950 36 36.
